Protip: copy the score and hand out the copies so that everyone is playing off of it. I realize this is general chamber music advice, but something about this piece (slow tempo, 'recitativ,' etc,) creates a lot of opportunity for zoning out and losing your place.

I have no doubt that your trombonists are of a caliber far, far, faaaar beyond those that joined me a few years back but, in a begrudging defense of my cruddy accompanists, I could allow it is possible they were unprepared for how "expressively" I could play

I used https://www.amazon.com/Back-Pittsburgh- ... pittsburgh as a reference. Many good options on YouTube, too.

Toby Hanks plays it on his "Sampler" album.

Do it on cimbasso - from memory it was written for Bass Trombone (or Tuba)

An awesome performance of an awesome work, by an awesome performer :D

I remember playing (and enjoying) that piece, under his tutelage (and suggestion), for my senior recital.
