I was driving to work a couple nights ago and I started thinking about the monumental events in tuba history. Here's what popped into my head (in no real chronological or preferencial order):

August Helleberg's mouthpiece
Bill Bell's "Carnival of Venice"
Roger Bobo's Carnegie Hall Recital
Floyd Cooley's album
Jim Self's "Close Encounters"
Tommy Johnson's "Jaws"
Gene Pokorney's "Jabba the Hutt" w/Utah Symphony
John Fletcher's Vaughan-Williams "Concerto"
Pat Sheridan's "Lollipops"
Waren Deck's "Bydlo"
Toby Hanks' "Sampler" (Stevens' "Dances")
Dave Bargeron's solo on "One Room Country Shack" (BS&T "Live and Improvised" album)
Bobo on Carson (TWICE!!)
Carol Jantsch wins Principal Tuba in Philadelphia
Alan Baer's first album
Tommy Johnson and Roger Bobo playing "Uranus" with LA Phil
Howard Johnson's - Taj Mahal "The Real Thing" album
Jim Self's first album
Roger Bobo's "Yellow Bird"

Enjoy! Add yours ....

Harvey Phillips inventing TubaChristmas was pretty epic.
Whoever thought to add a left-hand thumb-operated rotary valve was pretty smart, too

Common use of the 4th valve.

The genesis of the contrabass tuba.
The recent revival of the Eb tuba.
Compensating valve systems.

No order implied.

All of these changed tuba playing. But Pilafian's Travlin' Light broke out of that--it was the first tuba recording I could play for non-tuba-playing friends that would not attract funny looks.

Rick "remembering the funny looks when using a Howard Johnson recording to audition stereo equipment back in the 80's" Denney

That was my thought too. It was the first tuba feature cd you could find being sold in book stores & general merchandise stores - even places like Kmart. I routinely hear it being played during the XMAS holiday season over the loudspeakers in department stores and grocery stores. Tuba playing being used to induce people to buy more pot roasts!

Torchy Jones Brass Ensemble: "Catch the Brass Ring" forecasting the popularity of the modern brass quintet/ensemble. Abe Torchinsky's playing broke a few boundaries. They all were symphony players with great sounds and they did not tone down to a miniature chamber music sound. That was probably the pioneer brass ensemble project.
Of course I am biased, Abe was my teacher. :tuba:
