Well, the simplest thing to do, would be practice and play more. One thing I found helped my solo playing was playing a different instrument. Last fall I marched euphonium, and wouldn't you know, I made the Wind Ensemble. But, also I did not find myself suffering from tuba burn out as much as I did when I was marching tuba and playing in concert and solo settings. But, if you do not have that opportunity, make the most of it by using your concert fundamentals and playing music better then the other guys. Plus, if you can fill up a sousaphone and play louder with a clean tone then the rest of the section, you can play the crap out of some wind ensemble literature. For what it's worth. Yup, yup yup. Agreed.

Also, keep working to make your marching technique as clean as possible to make it easier to play properly. If you march well, you won't be beating up your face as much, and it'll be easier to breathe correctly.

The Kelly's aren't nearly so bad in the cold, if that matters where you will be going.
