Music from Classical and Baroque Period for Music History

Hello all

I am taking a music history class in college, and I am required to select a piece of music from the classical or baroque period to study closely and then perform later in the year.

My initial impulse was to pick a selection from the Bach Cello Suites, but apparently the lecturer forbids anyone to study these suites.

Thus, I am now faced with the task of selecting a piece of music from the classical or baroque period to perform on the tuba.

Any suggestions?

How about a nice horn concerto (a la Hayden 1 or 2)?

Horn works tend to carry over nicely on tuba, especially if you have access to an F.

A famous Romantic (so not applicable in your case) example is the Strauss Concerto (no. 1 I believe) which is part of the tuba repertoire lexicon.

The Domenico Gabrieli Ricercars for cello (especially No. 7 which has already been arranged/transcribed for tuba by R. Winston Morris) would fit perfectly and are really nice to play. For the most part, you can take anything written in the Baroque for cello and play it just as written or down the octave or anything for any other string or woodwind instrument and play it down as many octaves as needed (I, personally, am not a fan of Baroque brass music as it wasn't often written for entertainment and therefore isn't usually entertaining for me to play, though there are obviously exceptions to this observation such as concertos). From the Classical period, you can take all of the music I have already suggested plus, Mozart's horn music (the concertos) can be quite palatable.

I have played Mozart's 3rd horn concerto and had a blast!! Not that hard and it really ticks off the French horn players!!!

Mozart’s horn concertos 2 , 3, and 4 may be played directly from the parts for Eb horn, if you learn how to adjust for key signatures and for accidentals. #3 likely is the best one musically, as all 3 movements are good.

#4 has a more challenging 1st movement, the 2nd movement is not as great as with the #3. The 3rd movement is good. If there are time limits on your repertory, the outer movements of #4 might be a good choice.
