I'm playing a Schilke Geib mouthpiece and have been comparing it with the Stofer Geib. I'm liking the strength of both but like the clarity I'm getting out of the Schilke a bit more. The Stofer tends to turn my Rudy more dark in color (if possible!) and woofier, not the direction I'm looking to head.

I've got an Olka CB2 in the mail arriving tomorrow to work up side by side but thought someone here may have an insight to a mouthpiece that won't short me on the size of rim but maybe be a bit more shallow, less weighty, with the same cup diameter and a moderately sharp inner rim like the Geibs.

I've worked with Joe a few times on building a suitable mouthpiece but just keep coming back to traditional brass. Any thoughts?

I forget all of the details, but from what I've been told, the Schilke is more Helleberg-like than it is like the original Conn Geib. Strange that you've gotten that response from the Stofer Geib, I got just the opposite (it got brighter). The narrow bore didn't do me any favors though, but I do like the tone that it gives.

For the Blokepieces, I agree with that as well. I've owned one, and I liked many things about it. But I simply didn't like playing on stainless steel. Not sure how to best describe it, but just never felt comfortable to me, it was kind of "hard" and a "cold" experience. Not in terms of actual hardness or temperature, but more like a distant and impersonal experience. Loved the design, just want it in 1-piece brass instead. I briefly considered buying a Blokepiece and then sending it out to have it copied in brass (there's a place in Vermont(?) that does this), but that seemed 1) expensive, 2) like a lot of work and 3) kind of a jerk move.

The Olka CB2 is another very nice mouthpiece. Probably one that I should try again myself!

Thanks for the response, Bort. Yeah my first wonder about the Stofer Geib is that I jumped on a gold plated version; I wonder if a nickel finish wouldn't help brighten up the sound. Otherwise I still really like the response and clarity to my sound. If I could get it just a bit shallower...

I'm looking for something for lighter rep that I might use on solo lit, Mendelssohn, Berlioz (not that I *would* use this horn on those pieces, but with the right mp I _might_ try...)

Incredible how dark and rich these horns play! Beautiful, full sound. I love it.

CB 2 comes in the mail tomorrow. I'll report back then.

For the rep. you mention, you might consider Miraphone's "R. Winston Morris" model. I don't remember what number that is. It's quite shallow, but it might be a tad narrower than most Geibs. But it does have that Geib feel to it, and works great on the high and light stuff.

I used a Kanstul Geib in my Rudy, and thought it worked really well. The difference between that and the other Geib models... Not sure!

Bort I've yet to see a Kanstul Geib in my journeys but I'll keep a lookout. Fwiw the Olka CB2 does WONDERS on the Rudy; I nearly made Night on Bald Mountain a tuba concerto yesterday... And I really wasn't pushing hard. Also did the Bruch Scottish Fantasy chorales in the first two mvmnts with excellent success.

I think I found a keeper!
