Berliner tuba?

Post by Ken38 »

Hi guys,

I just won an auction here in south Sweden and got this horn.
Guess this is a kind of berliner tuba or its replica, but no engraving.

It's still playable and seems to be F tuba. Valves are... well, not completely dead, but clearly need a huge repair.
So cannot tell how the tone of each valve. Probably right 1-3 are similar to conventional 1-3 setting.
Since the R3-valve tube has a huge damage, it doesn't properly work.

I am neither a professional musician nor good at the history of musical instrument, therefore searched about berliner tubas (of course read previous postings), but couldn't find instruments having same tubing.

Do you have any idea what this tuba is and from where it comes?
And would be grateful regarding the recommended repair. I will visit a brass shop where my friend works.

Thanks!

Hello Ken38,

first of all, congratulations on winning the audition and also on finding a relatively rare tuba.

The fingering system:
left hand
1st whole tone
2nd half tone

right hand
5th valve puts the tuba in C
3rd valve is a whole tone in C
4th valve is a half tone in C

Your tuba seems to have been made sometime between 1860-1880+-
The maker was probably either Scandanavian or north east Saxon/Prussia. Some hi res detailed photos would help with the identification.
Older berliner valves tended to wear out quite quickly so I can imagine yours will need some serious attention if you intend to get it fully functional.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to send me a PM
Cheers from Berlin,
