G&P Cimbasso in F...reviews?

Anybody played one at length? Your thoughts?

I don't' get along with rotary valves usually and this seems to be the only piston model on the market, but not readily available to try. Just trying to find out more.

Thanks!

I did play one a few years back but was not able to make a side by side comparison. The G&P was a good Cimbasso. I would not say it was particularly great, but it was good and if you prefer pistons, well then it is probably what you will need to get. I prefer pistons myself but am extremely happy with the Wessex with 5 rotary valves, all RH. Mine has superb rotarys: smooth, quiet and fast. I also was more impressed with the Wessex as are several other players who think the same that it is perhaps as fine a cimbasso that is out on the market.

Besides G&P, Sam Gnagey also makes piston cimbassi (-os? -sen?) in F and Eb.

Of what little I've heard of the Wessex, I'm just not impressed with the sound. I'm wondering if anybody has had any experience with the smaller Cerveny F cimbasso- model 576? A local dealer is going to get a price quote for me, but there may be a long wait for one (I want to use it for 4th or 5th trombone parts in a college jazz band).

To my ears, the G & P comes across great sounding on what few Youtube clips there are out there. But those are close to 10 grand, aren't they?

I really liked the ones I've played. I've had the chance to play a few at the Trade show in Frankfurt and also visited the workshop in Milan a few years back. They make really nice instruments, in my opinion! The gauge of the G & P is a bit bigger than my Haag and it took me a little while to start finding the core, but that's just a small matter of adjustment. I played a Wessex cimbasso at the Frankfurt fair as well and I don't think it even comes close...the G & P is hand built by master craftsmen and still has a relatively reasonable price tag...when/if-ever I get a second cimbasso, I'll go for the G & P!

Just as an FYI (and you may already know), your videos are being used by another JinBao (same maker as Wessex) seller to sell their stuff.

Oh man, that's just sad! I didn't know, thank you. I'll send them an email!

Just found this old thread of mine. Maybe this could help me find one to trade my Yamaha 621 f for?
