Bigger than I'd want, but can make it work. Also depends on the other 4 people!

Depends on your Quintet, depends on how you play.

I like my 1293 in quintet and quartet (playing trombone II down an octave) settings. If the rest of the group can put out some sound, it works just fine.

I probably like my F better personally because I like to sight read on the F, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the other players like the 1293 and the foundation that it brings to the group.

Just my .02. Good luck with it.

Just try to use a smaller mouthpiece that works for the horn too. I'm a wider/shallower fan, with not too big of a throat.

1291 is a great quintet tuba, it can help to learn how to balance a group properly. Played that horn for years in quintet and sometimes I miss it now that I'm on a big CC and a small F.

Honestly, the answer lies in personal and group preference. Different people have different tastes on what they would like in a quintet sound.

From my experience in playing, I have found it much too large of a sound and I use a rented Eb for my quintet needs. My personal take on quintet playing is to have the tuba as an equal sized voice to the rest of the voices. For the quintet that I play in, the Miraphone is way too large for that so I use the yamaha Eb.

Again, the choice lies in personal preference. I would say it would be worth a try and see what you think. If you are wanting to get a tuba for just quintet works, then I would suggest something else.

I'm not well versed in what to suggest (I try not to be an equipment junkie of sorts) but someone else can suggest options that would be better. As your signature indicates, you own a euphonium, perhaps some sort of compensating Eb tuba would be a good fit for you.

Music-eagle:

Are you using a YEB 321 or a 632? 321 is a Great quintet tuba. Top valves not my fave on tuba.

YEB-321 I think? It's the small one with four valves in a line.

I definitely concur with you on the top action part, I was suggested that more because of your euphonium experience. But from here, someone else would have better advice than I do.
