Creative use of that tool can also help you ask better questions. The initial answer might have been posted in a thread but the detail you want may lie in a question which has not been asked. There is greater chance of receiving an answer to a new question on a discussed topic than a question which has already been answered three or four times.

This is definitely true. I don't know that it's the best thing I've learned, but it is a very useful fact to get straight early on.

Doesn't keep me from compulsively and opportunistically buying mouthpieces (and tubas, for that matter)...

(I didn't play up to snuff in a performance yesterday; just didn't seem to be able to put enough air through the tuba to make a controlled sound that suited me, and that threw everything off mentally. I played a bunch of long tones and flow studies early this morning, and then played as well as I could ask of myself in rehearsal with a different ensemble tonight.)

I've learned that there are times that I just need to read a post and then stifle myself. But I do find that with my age and experience that there is a lot to share, and in the process, a lot to still learn. I've learned that I still keep learning and part of that is learning how to learn. So that is what I have learned.

Many things:
We're not alone in our addictions.
There's no need to re-invent the wheel, but wheels don't all roll the same for all people.
VERY few people but us care or even notice which tuba we play.
The smallest tuba we would play is still huge to almost everyone else.
Other tuba players are rarely your employer or even in attendance at the gig.(the employer/audience doesn't care that something is hard for a tuba)
Many other things. Thousands of equipment tidbits.
That annoying kids can occasionally grow up to be respected pros.(be patient with the younguns)

I first came to TubeNet a 15 years before Wessex Tubas. TubeNet opened my mind to a world of tubas beyond British style 3+1 compensated Eb and BBb. It is where I first learned about BAT.
