Does anyone know anything about this horn?

"Conn 36J BBb tuba in silver, no case. 24" original detachable bell front bell and 20" Kanstul detachable upright bell. 4 front action pistons of .773" bore have been re-plated. Good solid 6/4 tuba."
I'm looking into pairing a 6/4 with my Piggy, and this looks fun. Didn't know if anyone tried it yet. Could be cut into a CC? Or too risky? I have no problems with BBb. Maybe someone else will hop on this. Interesting tuba.

Don't. Just don't. 6/4 BBb horns were cut to CC because there were few choices in 6/4 CC instruments. With more than four "CSO York" style 6/4s available, why ruin a BBb horn? And, cost? Doing that sort of work takes knowledge and craftsmanship neither of which are cheap. You very well could have as much invested in a freshly cut horn as it would take to buy a proven horn (which you can try before you buy). The cut horn might *still* be unplayable.RoosterTuba wrote: I'm looking into pairing a 6/4 with my Piggy, and this looks fun. Didn't know if anyone tried it yet. Could be cut into a CC? Or too risky?

I'll chime in and say the rest of these guys are exactly right. I have a great 4/4 tuba in CC, and most of my playing has been with CC and F horns since college. I recently bought a 6/4 Conn Grand Orchestral in BBb. A good horn is a good horn regardless of key. It doesn't take long for the fingerings to become second nature.

way. too. risky.
find a near giveaway 20j with missing valves and no bell and then you're in business.
It still won't be easy.

I guess that all makes sense. Just thought I'd seek advice on the internet because why not. Thanks everyone who replied! I get it, cutting to CC is NOT an easy surgery for a tuba to go through.

I used this exact combination for a year, and if I had been able to hold onto it, I would have. The 20 inch bell really gives the 36J some flexibility and control. And I believe this one has the first slide redone to adjust on top...
