As far as I know, Walter Nirschl is making his 4/4 CC for Besson, it's the 995. It's pretty much the same but with a different leadpipe, and still a great horn. I've heard reports of the 995 being inconsistant, but all of the ones I played, I thought they were pretty similar. Oh yeah, I bought one last November from Brasswind. Best $7,800 I ever spent. :)

As far as the 6/4 CC's are concerned, he stopped making them, the whole supply/demand thing... However, if you find a couple hundred friends and write him letters saying you want the 6/4 back in production, we might get somewhere. :D

Being that the 6/4's are "one-off" horns, he will make one for you if you have the money and the time. In fact, he will even make you one in BBb if you want. He speaks the universal language, that of printed paper for legal barter.

FWIW, this was confirmed in 2004. In fact, now that Besson is pretty well set with the jigs and equipment needed to crank out those 995's, he might even have more time/desire to make the 6/4 copy.

Problem is that the Nirscl copy is very good. So good that they have some goofy pitches and funky notes on some of them. The examples I have tooted on have been very different from one horn to another. Seems very similar to what people report back on the original York 6/4 CC's, the York 6/4 BBbs, the York 6/4 BBb's that have been cut to CC, and the Holton's, etc.

I bet Yamaha will make a York copy for anyone also. Consiering that they have what seems to be about half-a-dozen or more floating around, they have an idea of how to make one now. Just contact a Yamaha rep with a open ear and have a big checking account ready.

Sorry, not true at all. The 6/4's are still being made. In fact, a new one just made it's way over from Germany and is available for purchase through Floyd. Four were made up recently and they have all been spoken for. More are being built right now. However, with the Euro as it is they will run you approx $20,000, plus another $1,300 for the flight case! There is a large demand for them in Japan and around Europe right now.

The 4/4 Nirscl is out of production, however. This is a definite case of marginal utility and economies of scale. When Nirscl was making these they were up around $9-10K and not a lot of folks were buying them. Sell the design to Besson, let them "mass produce" them and let them set the price at a 20-25% discount of the original with about 90-95% of the quality and you have a much more competitive 4/4CC.

Meister Nirscl knows where the better business is right now, and it ain't in making cookie-cutter 4/4 CC tubas.
