However, the Willson model seems to be a little more lightweight in sound than the B&M models. IIRC, the Willson is a smaller bore and bell.

So...

For general usage, I would probably pick the MW25. The recent models have kick-butt (near Miraphone 186/188CC) intonation and have a fairly dark, near Alexander-like sound. The ability of the MW25 to support a full-size ensemble and also be able to go into use in a quintet when needed would be the determining factor.

FWIW, one of the best sounding horns I ever played was a B&M/Marzan four piston BBb. Oh man that horn sounded good. Too bad it really needed that main tuning slide right under the left hand!

If Willson didn't make the small bore small bell horns does anyone have any idea who could have made them? I read in another thread on the old TubeNet that there were prototypes made. Any old school folks ever see any of these?

I don't know if it's the same horn, but I loved my Marzan slant rotor CC, and Dillon has one in their "historic" tubas...

If your Marzan was on the list, that would be the one I would keep (forget the condition issues, you got a really good tuba). I hope that you are still enjoying the Marzan.

I am still enjoying it but I like the MW-25 as well. I like the sound of the 25 a little better (darker and fuller)...just tossing it around in my head. If I did nothing I would have no regrets at all. Just wondering "what would TubeNet do?

If you are in the Baltimore area again check out the Huttl (BB flat, four rotary valves) at Baltimore Brass, you might like it. To me it plays somewhat like my Alexander and has a nice dark sound (price is around $1200). As best as I can tell it was made in 1939.

I played a Marzan BBb (I think, that's what it was) down at Dillon a few weeks ago and I loved the sound and feel and it looks cool too!
