Re: LIVEWEBCASTTODAY 5/5 2pmET,11amMahler 6! SWR Sym Orch Zi
I heard Zinman do Mahler 6 in San Francisco sometime in the '90s. For the two hammer strokes in the finale, one of the percussionists pushed both hands down on some keyboard, leading to a huge sound I can only describe as being like a bomb detonating under the stage. It was unbelievable! - totally 'over the top' but also quite fun.
The same exact effect can be heard on a Mahler 6 that Zinman recorded in Baltimore that is now difficult to find. It came in a three-disc set that also included a good Tchaik' 5.
Zinman doesn't seem to be doing that in Europe.
