Audition Lists

Post by jdltuba »

Hi All!

I'm in search of orchestra audition lists for a project. Here's what I'm in search of:

1) audition lists from recent auditions or unique excerpts that you remember being on lists (other than the usual ones)

2) any sight reading excerpts you've come across

3) any section round excerpts you've come across

Thank you all for your help!

I believe that it was Ted Cox who completed a detailed study of excerpts called for at auditions, the frequency of each excerpt"s appearance at auditions, etc.

I have approximately 100 audition lists in my collection, as well as the document Ted Cox produced. There have been a ton of auditions since Ted wrote his article, and I think I have most of the major audition lists. The only one that I know I do not have is the full list for the Cleveland Orchestra after Ron Bishop retired. All I have for Cleveland is the list of five excerpts that were required for the recording to be submitted. As a note, quite a few of the lists I have are from various ITEC competitions (regional and international) as well as multiple years for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

About 15 years ago (or more), after Ted sent me his article, I did a similar study and included the lists from auditions that had been held since Ted published his work. There were over 50 lists included and I determined how often each particular work was asked. I then found the median and standard deviation for all of the works and found them broken down into a few groupings. It will not surprise anyone that Die Meistersinger was asked on 100% of the auditions. The next four works were asked almost 100% of the time, but were omitted once or twice for some reason. These pieces are (in order) Prokofiev 5, The Ride, Petroushka, and Mahler 1. One standard deviation below the top five (which were the five works asked by Cleveland for their audition CD) were Symphony Fantastique and the Hungarian March.

If you are interested, you can PM me your email address, and I will send you a zipped file of what I have.
