I've seen pictures of this model before, but until this one with you holding it, I had grossly underestimated its size.

Cool horn. Bigger than I thought it would be.

Ian, I played one of these pit tubas (perhaps larger/taller than yours?) for approximately 10 minutes in the home of our friendly tuba collector in Texas. I was comfortable holding it, like you, by placing the bottom bow on the top of my shoes. The horn was much lighter than I expected, but I imagine that playing for longer than 10 minutes in that position can become fatiguing.

I hope that you find an affordable, effective solution for your pit tuba stand search.

Fun horns. Mine was the more common .688" bore. I lugged it to Windjammers in Gettysburgh a few years back along with a Wenger stand I customized for it. The Wenger works well if you extend the bottom arm a foot or so. I just got tired of packing it around and sold it a while back. It's been sold twice since I owned it and I think it's probably living in a collection near Orlando now.

Probably a stick like those used on bass clarinets would work for supporting your instrument at the correct height, should be a bit stronger off course... It would require soldering the stick holder to the tuba.

I mounted a Stewart Stand onto two of my tubas. It gives you the adjustability to change the height for any sitting or standing situation.

Very nice! It is always fun to see an unusual horn being played and loved. As for a stand, I don't know what height you need, but consider one of the portable steps that they sell for RVs. It is basically a platform with folding adjustable legs. They aren't very heavy and do fold flat. Glue a piece of foam to the top and you are in business. They are available from Amazon or similar on line retailers.

Seems to be the opposite in intent from a Piggy . . .

I'd love to hear it. I bet it projects beautifully.

Thanks for pegging me weird-o-meter to full. I had never seen a horn like that... :)

Got to see your videos. Very nice!

As for the pit tuba, why not just use a tuba stand?

If you can get the part number of a broken or missing part, King still carried those in stock as of 2008. A friend ordered a third valve crook for a large bore rotary tuba (VERY rare) and got it within a month.

I have a base with a broken to sousaphone stand. Maybe we can work something out. Such as $1 and you pay shipping.

I have to say, this tuba is pretty wild, and you have a very accepting band director. In my experience, most times even a regular recording-bell tuba is shunned, and asked to not come back the next week. :|

I love the ad copy:
"More Imposing In Appearance - Occupies Less Space"

Kiltie, I think this tuba was designed for you. : )

I have one of these tall puppies, and I use one of those old adjustable height cradle stands made by Wenger in the 50s-60s. It is adjusted to be at the perfect height for me to play it standing up, or on a high chair/stool. Very stable, with 3 legs.
