The most is four. I am now down to three. I sold my Holton-Yamaha 321 BBb tuba to a friend here in the city. He very generously donated it to the brass band organization he belongs to so that any new tuba player will have a very serviceable horn to play upon joining the band. The Holton and King tubas will be the horns for my two concert bands this coming fall. The recording bell will do double duty in the local German band that I play in as well.

In good conscience, i have to answer too many too.

But there always seems to be room for 1 more.

I guess i subscribe to the no tuba left behind school of thought.
Thanks for playing!

I was at three however, when I bought my piston tuba I made a tax deductible donation of my rotary tuba to a charter school. So back to two.

If all your tubas disappeared into thin air and you wanted to buy an Alex CC, would you go for a vintage one or the redesigned one?

Greetings everyone. I am a new member here. I have a 1966 Amati stencil called a "Kroner" with it's original hard shelled case in near mint condition minus patina over the years and we just bought our son a used Mack Brass tuba for his senior year in high school. Looks like I am behind in my collection compared to some of you. :tuba:

If the vintage Alex played in tune then that would be first choice. If not then the new alex would be first choice as they do have pretty good pitch now.and still have a great sound. The one thing about the vintage alex is the sound has a little more depth and a slightly better low register. Currently i do own an amazingly in tune vintage alex as well as a new alex with a gold brass bell. Both are great.

I think it's interesting to note that Harvey Phillips, Arnold Jacobs, Don Butterfield, Chester Schmidt, Herbert Wekselblatt, Ron Bishop and a lot of other successful tuba players are identified with ONE tuba. Though they certainly "went through" a number of other horns, they are identified with one horn for most of their career.

It's not so much how many horns you've owned, it's how well you play the horn you've got.

Agreed - I've kept my 188 so long because I seem to play it in a way that the people who ask me to do gigs want to ask me again...
