Does anyone know who I could contact to acquire (legally) the scores of some of the fanfares that the Army Herald Trumpets play? I've tried to email the band representative, but they're not responding.

I could transcribe them, but I'd rather save the time and spend the money.

I already did transcribe a couple as a quartet--if anyone wants a listen, it's the third of the three fanfares on my quartet's promo video I just finished today (A Salute to a New Beginning):

If they are Army arrangements, they might just give them to you. I think the AF band has some of our (thier) arrangements online.

Then who should I contact? I do have a couple of friends in the band, but I know they're reluctant to make such a request.

It's been my experience that the Army Band is very protective of their arrangements. They aren't usually willing to share with other Army bands, so who knows if they will share with anyone outside of the military. Good luck.

Is transscribing these fanfares legal?

The army may want to reserve this music for state events and for its own events. And there may be elements in the army contracts with its house composers/arrangers that we don’t know about.

I can't imagine the laws governing these pieces are any different than any music.

Performance of "covers" is protected, and as long as the fees are paid to ASCAP for the performances, I can't see how there'd be a legal issue.

Now, if I were selling the score (the last fanfare is the only Army piece--the first one is a fanfare from Disney's Robin Hood, and the second is a traditional fanfare), then there should be issues.

You could try a FOIA request. I have no idea if there's a FOIA exception that would apply, but I can't think of one off hand.

Highly doubtful. The scores are still copyrighted, and I'm sure that the FOIA isn't a loophole to get free copies of that kind of stuff.

That might depend on how and where they were created. It's been a while since I had the class, but as I think I understand, service members can have personal businesses, as long as they don't use government resources to promote their personal interests. If "citizen" arranger creates something at home on a personal computer, than it belongs to the individual. If the same person creates something on a government computer at work for official government use, then that work now belongs to the government. That being said, the government can purchase copyright music and does all the time, however if said purchase is from an arranger already on staff the there may be some ethical dilemmas to deal with.

I wish I knew who the composers are... that's been difficult to track down.
