i'm looking for a solo piece to work on. I don't need it for any audition or jury, just to play. I"m looking for something that is in my range but might also stretch me a little. something between a grade 4 and grade 5 piece.

any suggestions

The problem with these "grades" is that no one's grading system is the same. I really don't recommend going by that. Beelzebub is nice, I played it a couple of weeks ago. His Majesty the Tuba is good. Really you can't go wrong with the standard pieces. If you don't know what they are just look up the recitals on the upcoming events page. That should give you a good idea. Take care....

I also don't put any stock in the "grade" given to a particular piece of music.

However, taking a guess at the ability level of the poster, I highly recommend three pieces:
1. Suite for Tuba by Don Haddad
2. Concertino for Tuba and Strings by Arthur Frackenpohl (I didn't double-check the spelling of the composer)
3. Introduction and Dance by Barat (don't remember the composer's first name off the top of my head).

I'd second Suite by Haddad, Beelzebub, and Concertino by Frackenpohl. I've played these all within the past three years. I'd say the Haddad is my favorite, because of the great melodic material, but they're all fun. Beelzebub is definitely fun in the cheesy sort of theme-and-variations band solo kind of way. And the slow movement of the Concertino was really a challenge, because it's so exposed.

Air and Bouree arranged by Bell is a good one.
Suite for Unaccompanied Tuba, Walter S. Hartley
Also any of the Bach Cello Suites arranged for tuba are fun and challenging

Serenade No12 by Persichetti(pardon my spelling)
i found this to be rather fun. It is exposed mainly because you are the only one there is no accompianment. and it's just kind of out there or so i thought when i played in a few months ago.
