As the happy owner of a Yorkbrunner, I didn't think I would ever need another CC tuba. I would, however, like to try Yamaha's "Monica" copy of the AJ 6/4 York. If it played even better than my horn, I might go for it. I'm also curious to try out that big 6/4 Gronitz CC.

Out of your list, I think I'd buy a "real" Nirschl CC, then a Getzen CB-50 (had one for 4 years and would buy one again). After that I'm not sure. I personally don't care much for Hirsbrunners, the Besson 995 (it is NOT in the same league as any Nirschl I've tried), or the Conn 56J (although I've played a really good 52J). The 1291 was nice. I haven't ever played a PT-606.

If you're seriously considering a Hirsbrunner, you might want to look at the MW 2000...excellent build quality and far better intonation than the HBs I tried.

Choisy also posts frequently on the Online Trombone Journal Forum (trombone.org) asking comparitive questions about trombones. From what I gather, he doesn't have the same opportunities to try different brands that the rest of us have.

Maybe he's planning to open a music store and is figuring out which brands are worth importing... maybe he's just curious...at any rate, I don't think he means any harm.

So far, of the ones I've played, I of course want the Besson. A GOOD example of it. Since it's the only one of the bunch I've played....oh well.

It really depends on what your doing. If your playing with a big orchestra, you need a big tuba. I've always lusted after a yorkbrunner myself. I've never played a PT606 but I do like the PT6.

I looked at all those as well as a Gronitz PCM which should be on your list as it was high on my list.

Out of the group I chose my silver PT-606 hands down. Second choice was a laquer 606 and the Gronitz the best non-606 to my thinking.

i wouldn't mind a B&S but i'm perfectly happy with my meinl weston 2155 i can't seem to over blow it. it just doesn't seem to have a raspy metal sound. but a friend of mine that i was in practice with today for a all county band concert had a cervey BBb had it really something fierce. oh well a B&S

I've tooted at least a few notes on most of these, and the ones that made me want to consider a switch to C were the Getzen G-50 and the PT606P.

That, and four bucks, will buy you a venti-nonfat-light-whipped-mocha at Starbucks.

No Mirafone 186CC? or 188? Both are more in tune the whats on that list.

Getzens are all used, no new offerings (good and bad).

Meinl Weston 2145 and 2155 are good. One of the best tubas I've ever played was a 2145 in silver that Dillon's had [insert drooling emoticon].

I've owned a Meinl-Weston 32 in the past and that was quite a good tuba also. Alexander sound and a great low register. Pitch/scale was quite usable.

Nirscl ain't making that 4/4 CC anymore. The 6/4 is too situation specific.

Which Hirsbrunner? My choice would be the HB2 (no pistons).

The Yamaha YCB-822 and the YCB-861 are good horns. Matt Walter's owned a 861 for a while, IIRC.

Rudy Meinl 3/4 or 4/4 CC? I remember a lot of favorable press about the Rudy 4/4 with pistons from a while back.

Point is, there are a ton of good 4/4 CC tubas. There is enough product variation that will allow for a real gem to come off the line in regards to any of them. Also, you list seems skewed towards piston valve horns. I think that there are a lot of good choices in rotary valved horns, a lot that people overlook for the "new" piston valve units.

Go to a place with a lot of tubas. Keep the one you don't want to set back down. It's that easy. That is how I'd choose a horn.

In HK ,small area , we only have 5 to 6 Hirsbrunner C Tuba, B&S PT-6, and all big Melton 2000, 2155, 2165 and 2265 (Bb Bell ) . Only 1 F Yamaha is selling.

Just no music shop here import those Miraphone 186, 188, 1291, Conn 52J , Nirschl ,Gronitz CC, Besson 995 .

I know it is a slightly different kind of beast, but how did the 606 play compared to your big holton?

from that list i would have to pick the Yorkbrunner, but i currently play on a yamaha YCB-822 witch is a 5V CC 4P
+1R, and i plays incredibly well, so if i were you i would give it some consideration.

I didn't compare them side by side and so I really couldn't say. The 606 was responsive and fun to play, with a warm, round tone and a lot of color. The same could be said of the Holton. I suspect that the Holton would have depth in the sound that the 606 would not have, and likely would find somewhat different applications.
