Re: SSB in 4/4
one of my favorite performances of the national anthem was Whitney Houston's 1991 Super Bowl performance, which was in 4/4. It really feels natural in this rendition.

Re: SSB in 4/4
Yup - that's the arrangement we're playing, sans Whitney Houston. I still don't like it.

This makes me think of all the times I've seen drum majors/majorettes conducting the 3/4 banner in 2 or 4 . . .

I once directed an amateur ensemble in a selection from Water Music.
It's in 6/4, or 3/2, or something like that.
I rewrote it in 4/4, that was the only way they could play it. They did okay though, eventually.

Eventually, would a listener have heard 6 at all?timothy42b wrote:I once directed an amateur ensemble in a selection from Water Music.

Re: SSB in 4/4
My Dad claimed that when he was in an Army band, before I was born, the band was supposed to play Happy Birthday for the Garrison Commander at a formation.
The way the story goes, he had a low opinion of the band director and assumed the guy would not know Happy Birthday was in 3/4 and could not be played on the march. So he rewrote it in 4/4 and passed out the music.
But the band director DID know, halted the band, and directed it in 3/4, causing a train wreck and lots of punishment detail for my Dad.
True or not? I can't verify. It may even be one of those apocryphal tales that's been around for ever. My Dad swore to it, and he was an honest guy, but he didn't always let that get in the way of a good story.
