Of PT6s and mutes

I could trade you a mute for that pt6...

Or if you don't like that suggestion you could always try to find a Humes and Berg aluminum mute. They sound really good.

For mutes, I think that you're best bet is to find one that produces the color that you want--your mute philosophy, if you will. To me, I think a mute should simply alter the sound that comes out of the bell rather than truly "muting" it. I prefer the Humes and Berg Symphonic mute for my PT6 simply because 1) I like the sound that it produces--it can project a distinctly different sound that will be heard at the back of the hall and 2) its all-aluminum construction makes it blend MUCH better in ensemble work where the other brass players are usually playing all-metal mutes.

But whatever your situation, make sure that youve at least experimented with 4-5 different models before just ordering one. That said, good luck on finding a place to actually try more than one type out.
