A track from last weeks recital to show off the Hawkes Dictor 4 valve euphonium, built in 1922;

It plays beautifully (though a little sharp up the top), here's a pic;

Nice, but isn't progress great?

Yes, absolutely! But where's the fun if I play this on a modern day instrument?

On the Dictor, the notes are not always there, sometimes it does not speak quite the same. The valves are good but the playing position is cramped as the 4th. valve is not quite in the position we are used to these days, but what a great little sound? It was one of the top instruments of its day. We have everything so easy these days.

I am constantly amazed at how well our predecessors played DESPITE the instruments they had. It's always good to look back to appreciate what one has.

Yes I agree, the little Highams 5v is the hardest to play, though again, great fun when mastered.

It's a bit like driving a vintage/classic car with a corner fast approaching, you know it will get round it at some point, though the steering might be a bit off line!
