Cimarron Music update!

Dear All,

As many of you know, in March 2004 the owner of Cimarron Music passed away. In December of 2004, along with a partner, I purchased Cimarron Music.

The project of getting the company organized has been a long process which still continues, but after many months of work I figured I would post a progress report. Below are some things that have happened in recent weeks or months:

1. There is a full catalog available for download on the homepage!

http://www.cimarronmusic.com

This contains 427 Tuba/Euph. related pieces. Many by posters on the TubeNet!

2. The website has been greatly improved! It is much easier to get around, view and search for what you need. Please forward any comments to the email below!

3. I spent the last week uploading .mp3 and .pdf files of many of the publications. There will be more .pdf files posted as we finish re-engraving each publication. We are in the process of re-engraving everything in the catalog (yep all of them). Please have a look at the Tuba Quartet section for many .mp3's and .pdf's!

4. We have 4 new pieces arranged by David Werden. These were premiered at the Tubonium Conference in MN and include:

The Phil Fluter's Ball - French
An Die Musik - Schubert
The Last Rose of Summer (Theme and Variations) - Moore
Serenade from "The Student Prince" - Romberg

Please look for many new charts in the next few months.

I want to thank everyone on the list that we met at the DC and West Point Tuba Conferences. Also a big thank you for all the support (and patience) that everyone has shown in this transition process!

Wishing everyne well,

How does one go about submitting a piece for publication?

I have a tuba duet in the works. Not finished yet, but will be soon.

How does one go about submitting a piece for publication?
I don't want to clog the list, but I figure other people might have the same question!

Most companies have their own guidelines, so this would apply for BVD Press and Cimarron Music Press only.

1. Email or call me first so I know you are sedning a piece. If it is something that I think we cannot sell, like an Oboe Quartet, I will point you in the direction of a publisher that publishes that sort of music. If it is something we think we can sell, see #2!

Not everything is about sales. I publish the 76 Pezel pieces in one book for brass quintet. If I sell to a dealer, I lose money. But I felt the chart needed to be done! My point here is that if it is something that should be published because it is significant to the Tuba world (or other world), I would publish it even it did not make a dime!

2. Send me whatever you would like us to look at. I prefer Finale files, but will take Sibelius or handwritten. The Finale files will speed up the process. If you have a recording to send along as well, great! Recordings always say a lot. It does not have to be a great recording, but something that will give us an indication about the piece.

3. I will then evaluate the piece(s). Please do not take it personally if a publisher decides not to publish something. It might not be what they are looking for right now, they have something similar or the same piece, etc. There are many fine pieces I have passed because I did not feel I would do the piece justice. Basicially I would not sell any Oboe Quartets because that is not we are known for!

4. Copyrighted pieces are always an issue. Many publishers will not accept anything that is not in the public domain. If the piece is a good piece, I will seek copyright permission! It is a 50/50 chance that it will happen and then I have to evaluate the price the copyright owner will be charging me. This is a very slow process. I just received permission to do a Brass Quintet arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin. It took 2.5 years, a billion emails and phone calls to get permission!

Publishers (including myself) are generally pretty slow in gtting back to people and getting the pieces into publication. Be patient. My main goal for Cimarron currently is to make sure everything that is in the catalog is available and can be shipped the same day.

We are now at a point where the new pieces will be trickling out. The process of getting the company up and running after a 9 month layoff has been a huge chore.

Please feel free to ask any specific questions. If appropriate to the whole list, I would say post them and if not send them to me in PM or email.

Wishing you well,

Wow! That is a lot of work.

I have bought a lot to tuba quartet music from Cimarron in the past and the only complaint I had was the quality of the engraving. It's good to hear you are addressing that.

If you have a few minutes, please try downloading a few of the new .pdf file samples. I would love to get anyone's opinion.

After purchasing the company, I soon realized this was one of the things that had to be addressed!
