Band Standards

Now that all off our spring concerts are finished, my high school wind ensemble has about a week or so just to sight read stuff until the end of the school year. I'm wondering what "standards" for band a high school group should play. So far our list for sight reading is:
1. Incantation and Dance
2. American Salute
3. Variations on America
4. Apocalyptic Dreams
What others should we add?

Irish Tune from County Derry and Shepherd's Hey
Salvation is Created
The Holst Suites
American Salute
Festive Overture is a great challenge. Lot of fun to play, too.
I would hold off on Variations on America for sightreading purposes. Ives doesn't make sense even after practicing it for 3 months. Sightreading it is asking for a train wreck.

I believe montre8 meant "Marche des Parachutistes Belges" by Pierre Leemans which is great piece for all HS bands to play as it is completely different from traditional Sousa marches. It is also very satisfying to play well.

Oh, someone already said Licolnshire Posy. I think anything by Grainger can pretty much be considered band canon though. I really like Molly on the Shore, which has a really cool part if you don't have a bass player.

Other than that I agree, whole-heartedly, with you on the chorales. Wish I got to play more.

I wonder if high school band has changed so much from the early 70s that they wouldn't have seen these. We played them multiple times when I was in high school. Still good choices.
