Tempest Prague/Mack 210 BBb in quintet?

Post by eupho »

Is anyone using any of these "do it all" BBbs successfully in quintet? I really like the rich warm timbre of these tubas but wonder if they work in chamber settings and how nimble they are?

We have one that my son plays for school and chamber groups. It works pretty good. Not as nimble or the best choice for a quintet but if the player is advanced it should work. Definitely more of an Orchestral large ensemble horn.

Agree with all of the above, and will add, it also depends on the rep. All my quintet work over last 3 years has been ceremonial/church. A larger horn would have been no problem. I use my 2j, which is perfect for me and my sound concept. Back when I was in a group that did more recitals, I could have used an f. A lot of newer works are written with f/bass trombone in mind.

I'd use mine in a 5-tet.

Who's going to stop me??

Do you have any video of your quintet that you could share? I would like to here the horn in that setting. I will PM you my email.

You may want to sit while using it however, and skip the Canadian Brass ballet skit!!

When I play in a brass quintet I find that a contrabass tuba is a little engulfing of a sound when I would play. This is prior to my acquisition of a Rudy 5/4 which dwarfs my previous tuba. Long story short I would tend to stick with a bass tuba (F or Eb) unless if it is a SMALL tuba like a Yamaha 621 or similar.

Thanks to those who provided input on the tuba in question. That was what I was seeking.
