Miraphone Hagen 495 vs 186 vs, 187

Hello fellow tubenetters,

So I was on the Miraphone website looking at their BBb tubas and their specs. The 186, 187 and the 495 all have the same specs for bell and vales bore, 17.7" bell and .772 bore. I know the tubing on the 187 expands more quickly than the 186 giving a slightly fuller tone. How does the Hagen compare with the 186 or 187?

A few weeks back I played a Hagen 495 at Dillons and it was very nice, but I did not have a 186 or 187 to compare.

My guess... The 186 it's going to feel a whole lot smaller than the other two... And that the Hagen will feel bigger than the other two. Different shape, which makes the old "two measurement" comparison a lot harder. If it were me, I would shop by size... And I would probably not buy a new 186, too many used ones out there.

Someone spoke of the new Miraphones being too "Vanilla". Is this the case for the 187 and 495 as well I wonder? I agree find an older one.

Ken, what are you going for with your tuba purchase? If you're looking for power and a dark tone, I recommend an older 191.
