Begging for damage

Postby Art Hovey » Thu Aug 10, 2017 11:18 pm

Why do so many people trying to sell used tubas with Yama-style 3rd valve slides like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-4-E-Flat-Accord-Tuba-Very-Good-Condition-Only-a-Couple-of-years-Old-Case-/322646079459?hash=item4b1f3477e3:g:JqcAAOSwmNlZY-6A

-choose to pull the slide out and put it in backward like this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-YBB-201M-Tuba-With-Case-/182712273426?hash=item2a8a800a12:g:~88AAOSwtPhZjRaZ

The whole point of that type of slide is to minimize potential damage by avoiding parts that stick out.

My students - over a number of decades - all have stated that this looks cooler to them. It is intentional. When I point out why it is backwards they fix it. Then the next time I see them it has been installed backwards again.

Art, you're just not cool enough for these folks, man. HAHAHA!!!

A contentious tuba player installs the slide that way so that they can have someplace to rest their pencils... across the inside bows of the slide when they're not using them! :P
