Hi All,

I've made an unboxing of my Wessex Wyvern tuba for those interested.

The "bumps" in the valve are normal. Don't know why, buy I have seen them in my horns.

The case to my Chi-com tuba still smells like Old Shanghai.

I think it's the polishing compound...

Joe,

I think he bumps he is talking about and I tried to answer are in the ports of the valve. All my horns have these.

Hey all,

In terms of the bumps I was referring to I was talking about the ones inside of the valve ports as mentioned. Johnathon actually commented on the video and clarified on that issue.

Bloke: "When spots on pistons sport no vertical rub marks, those are dents, and when spots on pistons display shiny vertical rub marks on them, those are pooched out spots.
Pooched-out spots - when they occur - are typically found around the tops, bottoms, and next to the porting of pistons.
Dents, obviously, are random.
Both can be caused by dropping pistons on the floor, etc." this is helpful as I was curious of if those spots you highlighted were some machining issue or if the piston may have been dropped, etc.

Should have some sound bites with some additional pictures soon once I get used to the horn and figure out how to record using my silent brass mute! (Don't want to wake up the neighbors :tuba: :tuba: :tuba: )

When do we hear how it sounds (sans the bare feet  )?
Hah. Sorry, I'm too used to my bare feet from Karate training

Both another Chinese manufacturer and a South American manufacturer seem to have copied the Yamaha sousaphone pistons' porting with some of their instruments.

With those pistons, the top and bottom porting is free of convex interferences, and only the center port features a very slight convex bump. If anyone here is using a Yamaha sousaphone in school (or owns an 826), pull them out and take a look. 8)

Perhaps this is why I was a bit surprised to see this on a piston valve. The last piston valves I took apart were my Yamaha Euphonium's and they are completely clear of any convex portions in the valve. As I said I've played mostly rotary valve horns in the past and never really noticed any such areas in a piston.
