Holton "Mammoth" First Rehearsal
The 1916 Holton "Mammoth" BBb 3 valve was used in rehearsal tonight for the very first time in this new season. I made sure to arrive early enough to have a good warmup and check pitches with a tuner. The result was a sound that filled the hall and the range was sweet in the upper and bottomless at the other end. This horn will easily fill the role of a great concert band tuba in a section of two. My stand partner is a veteran player who said he really enjoyed the sound and the fact that the Holton blends so well with his horn as well. An excellent purchase from Lee Stofer! We played two pieces in particular tonight, where the horn really added. They were "Toccata" by Frescobaldi and "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" by Wagner. It is great to be happy with a horn right away.

Awesome! Is it a three or four valve horn?

I am extremely computer challenged. I'll have to see if my son can help me post these.

Re: Holton "Mammoth" First Rehearsal
Thank you for the interest in this horn. I had intended to ask my son to help post the pictures of the "Mammoth" however he is extremely busy with his work right now. I know that "Tabor" posted the pictures of this horn from Lee Stofer's website when I purchased the horn at the end of August last year. Perhaps he will chime in on this or if someone is willing to send me a contact that I could use my Iphone to send the photos to in a text, maybe they could be posted that way. Thanks for your patience and I would like to include my King "Symphony" Recording Bass as well in the pictures.

Re: Holton "Mammoth" First Rehearsal
I guess this is the thread: Earth Mover. Not that it helps - the images are on photobucket, so they're gone - but just in case anyone else was going to look for it. My Holton is 1941 I think, curious to see how similar the large parts look.roughrider wrote:I know that "Tabor" posted the pictures of this horn from Lee Stofer's website when I purchased the horn at the end of August last year.

The thread "Earth Mover"was my first posting about this horn. I am going to contact Lee Stofer and see if he has any copies of the pictures that he could post here on my behalf. Thanks!

Re: Holton "Mammoth" First Rehearsal
The honest answer is that I owned the horn for year before I really felt comfortable enough to bring it to a rehearsal. The other horns that I use take much less air than the "Mammoth" does and I wanted to make sure that I could manage it properly before using it in public. I do use a MW CC tuba with the 4p+1r setup occasionally in another group, however the bulk of my playing is in BBb and the fingerings on the three valve are very solid as that is what I learned MANY years ago!
