Just had a parent approach me with this. Do any of you accept paypay for private lessons. How and why?

Yes, and because it's simple.

You should accept the payment the same way you would anything else, but I'd keep records (through Paypal or detailed records of your own). Chances are if you're getting enough work there's a possibility you'll need to/want to claim some/all of that on your taxes.

I accept it over paypal mostly for Skype lessons.

Thanks again for all the information. I spoke with my daughter who is a very well established flute teacher and performer. She had a big studio and 80% pay with PayPal. She wish 100% did. She does not pass the fee along just pays it and claims it as a deduction as a normal business expense.

While I totally agree there is also something to be said about having the money in your bank. When I was an aviation consultant, it was not unusual to have 10 grand in accounts receivable. Once I started taking credit cards (same cost as PP) I had my money and did not have to wait or collect.

This option has never, ever, worked for me. People have asked me to use it, and every time, I get charged a fee to SEND money to a "friend." From my experience, which is several times to several different people, that option is just bogus because I end up paying the fee (as the sender.) And they *always* say I can send it for free that way. Not so.

This might be based on how you have your account setup. I'm no expert, though.
If your PP account isn't pulling from your checking account and is instead charging your credit card, then PP is gonna hit you with the processing fee.
At least that's what I think will happen.

The basics of PayPal's fee structure is here. There can be fees for "friends and family" depending on where the money is coming from on your end. It is not always just "free" across the board.

Venmo is really popular among college students for exchanging money. You could also consider that as an option. I've never had to pay a fee when sending or receiving money, either.
