If this is what you are describing, it is called a Maibaum (Maypole)

...and here's a bit of explanation...

Hope this helps,

We just call them 'squirrel tails'. It's just a fancy form of a DS Sign.

A DS sign? Is that like an ATM machine or the Department of Redundancy Department?

As rendered by the lilypond notation system, where they call it a "segno bar line":
... also known as "serpent" segno.

Is this thread developing into a love camp?
As for may poles and music: Certain areas have associated traditions, where long coloured ribbons are fastened at the top of the pole. Dancers then hold each a ribbon. The starting position of a dancer is determined by the specific colour of his/hers ribbon. The choreography of the dance has been calculated so that the ribbons are weaved tightly to the pole in a colourful pattern.
I have no first hand experience with this tradition. I have seen it on TV at least one time, and as far as I remember it was a German feature on traditions in southern Bavaria. I didn’t find any fantastic photos via Google, only this one showing the pattern growing down from the top of the pole:

No. It is just going back to a previous place in the discussion and changing directions the second time around.

Funny... I've never paid much attention to those things other than them just being DS markings. At a German gig last night... I noticed that there are probably six or so different variations in my music. Ah, details.
