Quidditch

Post by Steve Marcus »

Some YouTube videos of this fanfare from John Williams’ Harry Potter score show the tubist playing a contrabass horn, while another video shows the player with a bass tuba.

The piece has a couple of spots where the entrance is at the top of the staff with rather angular voice leading, so it is “safer” to play the small horn.

FWIW, I brought the big horn to orchestra rehearsal this evening; the brass section seemed pleased.

So what is the collective wisdom from members of this forum who are familiar with this piece: bring the small horn for clarity, or just play the big horn instead of bringing two tubas?

I have always used the big tuba on this.
