Opera and Ballet Tuba Excerpt Resources

Post by seanburke »

My teacher tasked me and a few other students to prepare some opera and ballet excerpts as a holiday project (among some symphonic works) as we'd not really been looking through them throughout the year. The list includes mostly popular pieces by composers like Verdi, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, etc. These are all easily accessible in already existing excerpt books and other online resources. But there are a few on this list like works by Britten, Shostakovich or Herold that aren't as easily accessible. I haven't been able to find any books that have these yet.

Are there any resources that have have a comprehensive collection of opera and ballet excerpts for tuba currently on the market? If so, where could I find it?

I don't know if there is a comprehensive list, however I have these four audition packages that may be a place to start. It has two ballet and two opera lists that are both pretty interesting.

The Information presented is of great value, in particular the comprehensive material available in the drop-box link. Fine work. Add to this:

Giuseppi Verdi / Orchestra Studies for Trombone and Tuba
Six Volumes published by Musikverlage Hans Gerig in Cologne
Order Numbers HG 751 through HG 756.

"Passi Difficile e "A solo" for Trombone and Tuba
Published by Ricordi E.R. 2694.

Passi d' Orchestra per Basso Tuba
Published by Eridania in Mantove / Order No. E. 197.E
Edited by Marco Sala

Most of the Strass is covered but:
Strauss Orchesterstudien / Trombone and Tuba
Published by Edition Peters
Order No. 4190g
Symphonic Works - good for practice

Orchesterstudien fuer Tuba
Deutscher Verlag fuer Musik
Order No. DVfM 34001 and 34002
Two Volumes, edited by Dieter Meschke
Mostly symphonic but also some excellent operatic excerpts.

In German there are two words that look and Sound similar: "Kennen" and "Keonnen".
These mean "To know" and "To be able".

Bob Tucci-Munich
More that fifty years of operatic work...
At that, some of the excerpts will always remain a challenge.
