I was asked to play a walking bass line for "Take the A Train" by some buddies. Unfortunately I am horrible at reading lead sheet notation...which is what they gave me. Does anyone have any advice where I might find an already written out version ?? This is a last minutes thing and I do not really have the time to hack it out on staff paper ( not to mention I dont trust myself trying that)

Jack Gale has an arrangement for brass quintet of "A Train" which includes a tuba walking bass line. I would suggest looking at that and getting ideas for something you could write yourself.

This is also one of my huge weaknesses. I got the advice of Frank Ortega to take a few lessons with Paul Scott to learn this stuff. I figure I'll have arrived in this walking-bass-by-ear game when I can play the bassline to "Girl From Ipanema" by ear.

(Try it--it's tougher than it sounds! Jobin uses a lot of very odd harmonies).
