I think we need a new poem about the tuba!

Postby Dave Detwiler » Fri Dec 22, 2017 5:10 pm

Hi again, everyone - while doing research on the early history of the Sousaphone, I came across a long forgotten poem about the tuba. Give it a look here: https://tubapastor.blogspot.com/2017/12/long-forgotten-poem-about-tuba.html

I'm confident we can do better! Any poets out there willing to sing the praises of our beloved instrument in a fresh new way?! Go for it!
Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1927 Pan American 64K Sousaphone Grand

I think I’d have to go to Cuba
To see a trumpet even rival a tuba

A horn with mouthpiece thus impress’d
With air of player’s swelling breast

A horn who’s bass line has been lain
Below the treble’s sweet refrain

Tubas are played by fools like me
But almost all will sure agree!
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

That original poem now seems Shakespearean...

This season a Saviour was born
To the toots of a big old bass horn
Played by a shepherd
To fend off a leopard
But this tale is really not sworn!

Merry Christmas!

My tuba is a Meinl-Weston.
Others think it's not the best one.
It may play out of tune.
Though surely quite soon
I'll look through some others and test one.

If I then look at a Miraphone,
I may not even hear a tone.
The elephant room -
It goes BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
I won't whether it was blown.

Next on the list: Yamaha
Motorcycle or oom-pah?
Yes, they're quite shiny
Though their sound seems quite whiny.
When you pay, though, they will say, "aha!"

Indeed, it is large; but I have never heard it called a tuba.

To Tabor:

I love your little limerick
To amuse it really did the trick
But something's not so fine
There is no last, fifth line
So I had to try to finish it

So he told them to take it and stuff it!

There once was a kid from New York
Who wanted a new Yamayork
He didn't have money
So he started a GoFundMe
Instead of going to work

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who made a tuba from a bucket
He took it to band
They gave him the hand
He packed up, decided to truck it.

There once was a tuba named king
the bell of which really could ring
'twas large and was loud
its owner was proud
And with wind he taught it to sing

There once was a tuba called York
that was played by somewhat of a dork
His wife thought it funny
he spent all the money
and could not get a new spit cork

There once was a tuba of brass
that was left outside in the grass
without any reasons
it weathered the seasons
more eyesore than pain in the ***

In youth, I played a trombone,
outgrew it and played sousaphone
but through thicker years
'grew into my ears
my sousaphone I have outgrown

I bought a new tuba for band
it didn't quite go as I'd planned
heard Gene play a ditty
Buy It Now! that one's pretty"
and now I owe fourty-five grand

There was a young man from Arruba
That was offered the rank of Grand Poobah
But he just let it go
He said, I want you to know...
I'd rather stay home and play TUBA!

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the faces tremble,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the folks bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
