Here is a recording of Warren Deck performing the Strauss Horn Concerto in Eb, accompanied by The U.S. Air Force Band, Arnald Gabriel conducting. This was from a T.U.B.A. Symposium in 1983, Baltimore, MD. (I love this piece on tuba!)

Great! Thx for sharing :!:
Deck sure had a colorful, full, clear sound. Very musical performance.
I enjoy these Deck recordings :tuba:

I've always been a fan! I think the first time I heard him was up close at a gig. I played a NYC studio session for a movie in 1980, and sitting next to me were Sam Pilafian and Warren Deck. Nice tuba section!

Mr. Deck really went above and beyond.

Warren's time was always impeccable. That's one of the biggest things I took away from studying with him. He used to tell me on dotted eighth sixteenth rhythms that "some poor *$&@$ has to fit three sixteenth notes in there - don't make it harder for him." Still cracks me up.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Deck play in person exactly one time. I dropped in to Dillon Music for a chem clean and standing in the main entry room (where the mouthpieces, mutes and whatnot are for those of you that know the shop) and chatting with Matt, some killer tuba playing started drifting in the from the tuba room. I stopped mid-sentence and Matt says "you know who's in there? It's Warren."

This was after he left the NYPO but he still sounded like a million bucks to me. I just stood in the hall listening to him noodle on tubas for like 15 minutes while Matt worked on my horn. It was glorious. There aren't many people who could capture my attention just "farting" around on tubas to try them out, but he certainly could.
