I finally worked up the guts....

... to play my 100 year old, three valve Eb in a polka gig over the weekend, and it went pretty darn good! This group uses sheet music, and I only flubbed a few fingerings here and there (I normally use my 4/4 BBb).
It held its own quite well I thought. I only had to take a few things up an octave that the horn simply couldn't play as written. It has enough punch to keep up with the louder sections and is super easy to get a nice sound out of. The group consisted of two clarinets, one alto sax, two trumpets, a trombone, and me and I thought it balanced just fine. No one else complained at the end!
This is the horn I want to convert to front action with 4 or 5 valves (see my post in the repair forum) to make it just a little more useful, but I was pleased that I finally worked up the courage to use it in a "real" gig!
