Re: flu - and the Army conference
I certainly support what Joe is saying in the original post. From what I have been reading and researching, this year's flu epidemic is nationwide and deadly-------very dangerous virus. So far, I've been able to avoid it by staying away from confined spaces like concert halls, busy restaurants, and movie theaters. Be careful everyone, but enjoy the Army conference. It sounds really interesting this year, particularly Jonathan's exhibit. Wish I could be there, and hope there will be some photos posted later on.

Ha. Reminds me of the Neilsen/Presley condom scene in the Naked Gun movie, one of the funniest films ever made.Three Valves wrote:OK, screw the secret signal. I’m the one wearing the full body condom!!

Just getting over the flu myself. Didn't go near my tubas for the past 2 weeks. Can't let them catch it from me!

I'm a believer in the flu shot but YMMV.bloke wrote:Per typical year-in/year-out, those shots are pretty useless.
Let's just nod-and-smile, wash our hands, not touch our faces, and not talk into each others' faces.
This morning's radio had an additional piece of advice on sanitation: clean your cell phone every day.
Your cell phone is exposed to germs all day long, every time you set it down on a table or near people. Then you touch it with your hands (primary germ transmission is by hand) and move it to your face.
I don't know if there is research to support this but it makes sense to me.

Re: flu - and the Army conference
The contents of our flu shot each year are determined by what strains are prevalent in the other hemisphere, which experiences its flu season before we do. There are numerous strains of the flu and one vaccine can't cover all of them, so they cover the ones they think are most likely to be prevalent. Sometimes it's spot on, and sometimes it's a miss (like this year), but do not take for granted that years where it's a miss are only a vague preview of what a season with NO flu shot might look like.timothy42b wrote:I'm a believer in the flu shot but YMMV.bloke wrote:Per typical year-in/year-out, those shots are pretty useless.

Re: flu - and the Army conference
Don’t inhale through the mouthpiece when you test instruments.
Dealers are likely to clean the cups, rims, and exteriors of test-mouthpieces, but what about the backbores?
If the conference had been within the UK army, all of the uniformed musicians had been paramedics.
To me the flu-shots would have been more dangerous than the flu itself. The vaccine is based on eggs and it contains formaldehyde.
I hope you all survive!

Same thing with the NAMM show out west too, even though it's not snowy and bad outside it's still a good idea to pass this year.

Re: flu - and the Army conference
Not to downplay the risk, but I would think the air flight to the event possess a greater risk of infection sitting in close proximity to potentially infected people you cannot move away. The elephant room is not normally that packed with people.
Just try to keep your distance and follow good hygiene. And bring your own mouthpiece!
