How do CC(or any other type other than BBb) work

Postby TheTuba » Thu Mar 08, 2018 9:29 pm

Ok, just want to clarify some stuff

so, imagine your regular staff, et.cetra

BBb mode turned on

the Bb in the staff is a Bb right?

Ok, so does the Bb on a CC tuba stay in the same place or does it move to another place than the 2nd bar line?

I know the note itself changes, just want to know if it moves anywhere in the staff lines.

Thanks!

Nothing changes except the fingerings. For a CC tuba, Bb is now a 1st valve note

It's not like Bb trumpet music, and it's not like British brass band music. A printed Bb always sounds as a Bb regardless of the key of your tuba.

The notes and associated pitches are always the same. A Bb always sounds like a Bb. On BBb tuba, you play it open. On CC, you play it 1st valve. CC tuba is a whole step higher, so you simply finger everything a whole step lower.

Thinking of Eb and F tuba as finger everything a fourth or fifth lower can be difficult. It might be best to learn those tubas like you'd learn a new instrument.
All that, plus $8.00, will get you a venti at Starbucks.
Or in my case, a large can of Folgers.

Yes it will sound the same if you use CC tuba fingerings on a CC tuba reading bass Clef music, which is always concert pitch (well, some instruments sound an octave lower than written pitch)

There no reason you can't play a CC Arban on BBb Tuba, but the music was written with a instrument in mind where concert Bb is an open note. The book is very Bb centered

Blow in one end, sound comes out other end. Change tones by mashing buttons.

The printed music does not change for different keyed tubas. You use a different set of fingerings for each key of tuba.

I will also add that I have a later edition of Arban’s that is very centered on “C”. I don’t know the version history of the book but I do know mine was edited with an emphasis on CC tuba.

And before this thread heads that way: No, you do not need a CC tuba.
