2 Rudi Meinl tubas for Alpine Symphony with the WA Symphony Orchestra.
I played a new Bayreuth and my colleague (the wonderful Scott Frankcombe) played an older 5/4 BBb.

I've played Alpine a few times over the years, but it's never been as much fun and deeply satisfying as playing it on a fabulous BBb - having 2 of them is just fantastic!

Talk about a thunder machine!!! Have just caught the delayed FM broadcast. A BIG beautiful sound with some real growl at the right times. Well done, Cam!

I'll watch for it to be streamed and pass the word along if it comes up.

137 piecce band?!?!

Thanks Ken, I missed hearing it online with the time difference and we'll be out when the local broadcast of Alpine starts soon. I'll try and get a copy of the recording - I'm looking forward to hearing how it was from the front. I believe it will eventually be on the WASO youtube channel.

I think the reference in the program was that Strauss intended it to be an orchestra of 137 - I know we didn't have quite that many on stage.

Listening to this, and some other things really makes me wish I had not signed up for the army band back in 78. Oh well.

It would have been an absolute gas playing that gig with you with my old King. At least I know that the person in the posi (you) is doing what my concept was.

Whatever number numbers you had, it was good stuff.

Let me know if you ever come to this side of Oz.

Why are these Rudolf Meinl Tubas so hard to come by the USA ? i do know it is a smaller family owned and run operation in Germany , but to find people that sell them here in the USA nearly impossible . Could anyone else share some info on this subject please ? thanks so much .

I purchased mine (the far tuba in my avatar) from Lee Stofer when he was in Atlanta. They are special order instruments and there's no stock available.

Lee is now only a state away in eastern Iowa, which has made it much more convenient to get my tubas serviced by him. He's superb in every way.

This is his contact page.

No-one carries stock of new Rudi Meinl tubas anywhere in the world. Very occasionally Thomann might have a single RM tuba in stock but they are usually "on request".

If you're interested in RM tubas I'm sure you can find a Rudi owner who will let you play one, and there is no problem buying direct from Germany.
