Tuba mouthpiece with holes in it?

Found an interesting mouthpiece on ebay here

Wondering if anyone can give me any info on the holes found on the mouthpiece. Just interested in what's going on

Wow, that's really hard to look at. I'd be willing to bet that's some sort of pressure sensor for doing an experiment.

Looks like somebody has tried mounting a pickup for electronic amplification. And then has tried to close the holes after the experiment failed or was stopped.

yes, this looks like the old conn pick-up. there was a mic/pick-up mounted on the outside of the mouthpiece and a wire running to a belt pack/pre amp with tone controls. I still have mine somewhere. conn sold them back in the 70's. along the same time I remember seeing a guy at a disney audition just throw a mic down the bell. I don't remember the sound being anything desirable so I never used the one I had.

I used to have a Barcus-Berry setup that had a transducer that mounted into a 1/4" hole in a mouthpiece.
