Hi everybody.
I personally have a very good feeling with Bach mouthpieces, but I find that none of them match well with the compensating Besson I have (Eb). I mean it has a good sound with Bach but no projection at all. So I tried the alliance t3 that comes with the horn. The sound got better so as the intonation. The t3 is a more deep “horn shaped” mouthpieces than Bach, so my question is “do You think that horn shaped” mouthpieces are a better match for compensating instruments?

Better for all tubas.

What is probably doing it for you here is really the throat and backbore.

Interesting that the Besson Eb comes with a T3. When I bought my previously owned Besson Bb it came with a T3. It was still in the original wrapping and apparently had never been played. I tried it out and liked it and now it's the only mouthpiece I'm using. I'm also using it on my Besson Eb. I've been told it isn't ideal to use the same mouthpiece on an Eb and Bb, but since Besson apparently supplies the T3 with both instruments I guess they think it's OK.

I have a gold plated alliance neish I would sell you if interested. I have a Wessex Solo 3+1 compensating and I use a Sellmansberger with an imperial cup and shank and a 32.6mm rim which I love. I was pretty happy with a Denis Wick 3sl before that but the Sellmansberger works better for me.

I don’t buy into the idea that compensating tubas take special mouthpieces.

I rather think that a mouthpiece should act as the optimal link between a given player’s physical and musical conformation and a given tuba’s acoustic properties (bore and bore progression ratios).

How about unusually long and complex valve circuits?

A compensating tuba takes a very efficient mouthpiece to get the best out of it, that is true.

In my experience non-compensating tubas also work best with a mouthpiece with the same efficient qualities.

For me the parameters of efficiency vary more with the individual player than with the various tubas within the same pitch and size range.
