What was the first bowl-shaped mouthpiece?

Post by bort »

What are some examples of early bowl-shaped tuba mouthpieces? That is, we all know that the Helleberg is basically the original funnel-shaped mouthpiece. Is there anything similar for bowls?

I know the Conn Geib was like a funnel/bowl hybrid... but what else would be early and in the bowl category?

Have you considered 1800's mouthpieces? The Civil War-era Eb contrabass Saxhorn ones I've seen were all bowl-shaped. Some have irregular (not round) throats and shanks that angle a little to the sides.

Ok, sorry... maybe not like the first...

But in the first half of the 1900s, what were the bowl shaped options?

The original Moritz-Wieprecht mouthpieces? And probably the Ophicleide mouthpieces from which they were derived? And the serpent mouthpieces before that?

It was the 25. I played one all four years in high school.
