I don't know the current answer but if you want to shoot for a world record i'm game. I'll sell you my Hirsbrunner for $250,000 and my GW MMVI for $4,200 and we can make history as the most expensive tuba ever sold.

The Thein CC tuba costs about $40,000. Thein mouthpieces cost about $360 in silver, or $470 in gold (all without VAT, and according to today's exchange rate).

Other mouthpiece heavy-hitters:
Monette: $410 (same price, silver or gold)
G&W titanium mouthpieces: up to $435
I also bought a vintage mouthpiece for "well more than Monette" money. I sold it, because I couldn't justify the cost vs. the amount I used it.

Hendrik‐Jan Renes is about the only Thein player I can think of by name... I think there's also a Thein player in Venezuela (bought during more prosperous times?)

From what I've heard, some of the big orchestras in Europe will pay for the tuba, instead of the player. Maybe that has something to do with Renes' tuba... maybe there are others?

Rudy Meinl tubas are about as handmade as they can possibly be, so I'm not surprised that they would be well over $20k. Actually, there's a growing list of $20k+ tubas out there (including my own! )

I am not going to bother to weigh a mouthpiece; but I am sure they are several ounces. With the price of gold, I wll buy as many of the 24k mouthpieces you have for $1,800 each.

There are also a lot of expensive gimmicks to make you sound world class. I can't remember the details but there was some piece of precious metal you could buy and strap to your tuba/leadpipe and it would instantly improve your sound. Laughing yet?

1. Mouthpiece makers use round stock (Rods) to turn a mouthpiece. Few (None?) of them have the capacity to melt the shavings to remake a round stock.
