Michel Godard: not only a great tubist, but the only person I've seen anywhere who can play a serpent beautifully and in tune

I (mostly) enjoy listening to really good players making really good orchestras, quintets, and jazz bands sound even better.
Same here :tuba:

If you're impatient, skip to 4:45.

His Sunflower City albums are totally amazing.

There are a lot of technically great 'tuba stars' today, but very few of them catch my ear.
My favorite players have all passed or retired by now. And like a few others have said; tuba sounds it's best in an ensemble of some type. :tuba:

This is a cool thread! I like the following players, but I am excited to check out some of the people others have listed with whom I am less familiar.

Orchestra (In no particular order)

Gene Pokorny, Alan Baer, Chris Olka, Craig Knox, Mike Roylance, Norm Pearson, Jeff Anderson, John Dicesare, Randy Montgomery, Tony Kniffen

Band

James Hicks

Quintet

Craig Knox

Brass Band (I don't typically care for that much, but I love Youngblood)

Nat McIntosh

In light of recent events and looking at the current playing field in the US it's practically impossible to ignore the amazing playing of Chris Olka and Derek Fenstermacher. I'm also a very big fan of Craig Knox's playing (both in orchestra and in quintet).

I recently got a copy of Les Neish's tuba albums "Salt of the Earth" and "Shine." I'm extremely impressed by his playing.

In MO we now have the awesomeness of Joe LeFevre (KC) and Derek Fenstermacher (STL). Having grown up a Chicago boy, it was going to be hard to replace the man that I thought did one of the best Jake impressions out there (Mike Sanders), but I can't wait to hear Derek! And Joe is already killing it on the west side!
