YCB 621 versatility? EEb comp in Quintet?

The YCB 621 is a proven quintet and solo horn. I am curious as to what other situations people have found it works in as opposed to a 4/4 cc, F or EEb?

I have heard some EEb compensating players sound great in quintet(i.e UNT Central quintet, EmpireBrass and British and Australian quintets). Who else out there is playing a compensating EEb horn in their quintet?

I used my 621 CC in quintet plenty of times. I prefer using my 186, though. The 186 has more color to the sound, and better pitch. The low notes do pop out easier on the 621. Any tuba would work and have pros and cons. Just pick one you like to play and go with it.

I would try out a number of tubas instead of trying to find the perfect one. Master one tuba first, learn, and learn from it what you like in terms of sound and response. Since the question was asked, I use a Mirafone 184 CC5U, a little old school compared to the current tastes out there, but it gets the job done with no complaints, which at the end of the day is what we all want.

I think the 621 can do anything short of large ensemble/orchestral work. It's a great jazz horn (see Bob Stewart) and great for modern chamber music (Michel Godard, Jay Rozen).

Went to a couple recitals in college where the tubist was playing a 6/4 Nirschl CC... Who cares about "appropriateness," it was a blast to listen to.
