You have figured a way to refine how to hear equal temperament against a drone.

Genius! And maybe a major advance in pedagogy.

I would try it right now if I had a way to hear a drone without my tuner hearing it. I don't have one of those bell tuners, would that work?

Okay, I made it work with a trombone.

I have my drones on a stereo. I just moved my tuner across the room (drones are more effective when you're facing away anyway - I don't know why but it seems to be true.) The tuner still hears the drone, but when I point my bell near it that note overrides the softer drone. You might be able to do the same with a tuba depending on how directional your bell is, I dunno. Anyway, I can compare how a note sounds against a drone, versus what the tuner tells me.

This is really challenging, and seems really useful.

This sounds like a very good exercise that every musician could benefit from. Thanks for sharing.

You play with strings long enough you begin to think like them... better to be sharp than be out of tune! :P

Lesser of the two evils.....

Beats are good. They mean you're getting close. If you can't hear beats you're REALLY sharp.
