Bill Watrous is gone...

Postby Dylan King » Tue Jul 03, 2018 7:10 am

Hi everyone,

I heard that Bill died last night. What a wonderful trombone player he was. Just thought I’d share.

Much love,

Dylan

I always thought this was great. Worked on my slides. Bill Watrous explains how to make his trombone slides super-slick...

I liked his stuff in middle and high school, but I was really big on him back when I was an undergrad at North Texas. A roommate made me sit down and listen to a lot of his music I had never heard, effectively turning me on to his playing; I was a huge fan for about five years.

In a time of poverty I sold off many belongings, and my records, cassettes and CDs all went bye-bye. In later years I slowly rebuilt a good chunk of that library but never ran across any of his albums at the used record shop near me.

And he sort of disappeared from my musical life. How sad for me...

Rest in peace, Mr. Synergy.

NY Times article about his growing fame from 1975...

I love this tune. We did this in marching band in high school. It was also a hot chart in DCI, used by several corps over three or four years. I studied this recording obsessively back then.

Are there - actually - contemporary versions of Watrous, Rosolina, Fontana, etc...??

...and - if there are - are they (though top jazz musicians - since the 1960's - have probably even been more anonymous than top classical musicians) "known" ?

Bill Watrous performed with The U.S. Coast Guard's jazz ensemble, The Cutters, in 1976. Here is a playlist with the entire "Watrous" concert. There are 4 tunes with just jazz ensemble, and Watrous joins us for the other 7. (If you just want to hear his tunes, look for his name somewhere in the title.)

One of my favorite jazz recordings was the BIll Watrous - Carl Fontana duet record put out many years ago. I remember seeing it in a music store. It was $17 (an astronomical price for an LP at the time) and all the text was in Japanese. I recognized two things. The names of the players and their picture. I snatched it up. I think I loaned it to a friend and never saw it again. Sadly it is no longer in print and was never put out on CD or mp3. Good stuff!
