Phil Snedecor has a new Book for tuba

In case you havent heard, Phil Snedecor has written another low etudes book for tuba. The fist Low Etudes for Tuba was written in 1991 and takes the tuba player to places very rarely seen in printed music today and offers some of the most challenging and pleasing music to play. Well Phil is at it again with a new book called "Lower Etudes for Tuba". Phil called on a very small group of us to assist and be his beta testers to test out the new etudes prior to the books release just this past week on July 16th.

If you like the 1st book you will love the second one as he includes a few pieces that can be played in duet with the first book, the biggest issue is to find another tuba player to play along with but those etudes can be played alone as well.

All the etudes in the new book are very accessible to a wide rang of abilities so dont think of not getting this because you need the technical abilities of a pro to get theough them. Students and growing players will become stronger players when studying this book and pros will certainly be challenged as they make their way though these etudes.

Here are a few video samples Phil has asked us to put together in launching the new book.

Both low Etudes and Lower Etudes for tuba are a must have for any tuba player.

Thank you for the heads up. Very much looking forward to this new edition.

VERY cool that some of these can be played as duets with corresponding etudes from the original book.

Hi Bill -
Phil believes that you should have the physical book, not a .pdf.
Sorry -

Just ordered my copy. My versions of the prior Low Etudes may not be quite as ready for prime time, but working these over time as musical pieces has helped me improve tremendously in many ways. Thanks to the players for inspiration and to Phil Snedecor for the concept and compositions. Always more to strive for!

So what are some opinions of the new book for those who have already made the purchase? I was one of the lucky few to have been involved as a tester early on so for me these have been a treat to play. As i get into better playing shape I will certainly be putting a few videos.

Are there any favorites that are early standouts for anyone playing these?

As mainly an ee flat tuba player i am finding that the second book is more helpful to me than his first due to its register. The first book, it would seem, was designed for a contabass tuba in mind.It worked great on my bb flat neo but not so much on my 981 besson soverign. The duet idea is a brilliant idea.. one contabass tuba on the the first book and a bass tuba on the second book. His books would be of enormous value to our bb flat tuba playing friends in England, especially his first one, as that book is in a register that a tuba player would play in a british brass band. The only problem is that Phil's books would have to be written out in treble clef.To the people involved in ths project thanks very much for posting videos. It is great to hear how things are supposed to sound...especially for someone like me.

For you and most BBb tuba players in England, i know you read in treble clef for brass band parts but i assume you do read in Bass cleff for everything else, right?

Let me chip in here, no. Most brass band tuba players over here only read treble clef. Yes, of course there are exceptions, but as a "whole" (sections 4 up to championship) I'd say 90% are treble clef only, and above 95% if you're just talking BBb.

You must be a god on the tuba, do you have any videos we can see and hear?
