So I picked up this old Martin. I'm 99.9% sure its a Mammoth but thought I'd get the TNFJ's opinion. Never played a Martin before. I'll like to see what it's like compared to the Conn 2xj's.

Looks like a mammoth to me! Having owned and played a few 2XJ's and a Martin Mammoth, I can say the Martin is less of an air hog. The Martin also slots better and has a little sweeter tone in my opinion. Both the Conn and the Martin play better with tuning bits, so definitely pick some up if you don't already have some. Good find!

Thanks for the input guys. I'll let you know how it plays. I couldn't pass it up for that price even though I need another BAT like I need a hole in the head. What's one more.

Glad to know about the MAW bits. May have to get some depending on what the ones with it look like. I'm sure just like the big Conns the bits make all the difference.

Yep, that is a Martin Mammoth of a post-war vintage.

Great find, congrats! Yeah, the proper bits are even more essential on these horns than the Conn, because the Martin bits actually taper with the leadpipe, unlike Conn bits.
These horns are awesome, very in tune, nimble and sweet sounding for the size.

It looks like those may be original bits....from what I understand, it is not that common to find them.

Well it showed up. Packing job was $#!& and I let the seller know. Luckily the horn sustained no major damage. Have not had time to clean it out but it does play. The one bit is a Martin bit but the other is a 2XJ bit. Guess I'll have to cough up the $$$ for some MAW bits eventually. Still it was a good horn for the money. I think it will clean up well.

It's in better shape than the one that came with it so I'd go with yes. How much you want for it Joe?

So Bloke had the bit I needed. What a difference in sound with the correct bits. It's a keeper for sure. Love the big old tubas.
